The short version
It started as a text thread.
For years the six of us were the people our friends texted. Where should we eat in Kingston? Which trail is worth the drive the second week of October? Is that cider place still doing the thing with the doughnuts? We'd type out the same answers over and over, each time a bit longer than the last.
Eventually the thread got embarrassing enough that we started writing it down properly — where a place is, what it costs, when it's actually open, whether you can get a wheelchair to the overlook, and the one thing you'd want warning about before driving an hour. That turned into this guide.
We're not visiting
All six of us are from the valley and none of us moved away. That's not a credential so much as a bias we're upfront about: we know which farm stand is worth the detour because we've been going since we were small, and we know which much-photographed spot is a forty-minute queue for a ten-second view.
Between us we've got a couple of people in the park service, a couple who've spent their working lives in kitchens and front-of-house around the region, and one who has somehow ended up on nearly every trail crew between Cold Spring and Windham. Most weekends at least one of us is volunteering somewhere — trail maintenance, a market table, the odd shift at a food pantry.
How a place earns its tier
Every entry gets ranked Top pick, Great, Worth it or Optional. That ranking is ours, argued about at length, and based on what somewhere is actually like on an ordinary day — not on how it photographs, how new it is, or how much anyone would like to be included.
Nobody pays for a listing and nobody can. There are no affiliate links, no sponsored entries and no ads. When a place closes, changes hands or quietly gets worse, it comes out on the next pass — and we'd rather tell you that than leave it sitting there looking current.
What we can't promise
Hours move. Kitchens change. A road washes out and a trail closes for a season. We re-check the guide continuously and note the last refresh on every guide page, but anything time-sensitive is still worth a phone call before you commit to the drive. We'd rather say that plainly than pretend otherwise.
