Universal Preservation Hall in Saratoga Springs is an 1871 Gothic church rebuilt in 2020. It once hosted Frederick Douglass; now it runs rock and jazz.
The building started life in 1871 as the First Methodist Episcopal Church, built by architects E. Boyden & Son in High Victorian Gothic style, considered among the finest examples in the country. Its pulpit hosted William Jennings Bryan, Henry Ward Beecher, Frederick Douglass, and President William Howard Taft. By 1976, the Methodists had sold the building to Universal Baptist Church, and by 2000 it sat condemned.
