Steelbow Farm started in central Maine in the winter of 2017, spent a few seasons in Austin, Texas, and landed in Ancram when founders Jason Gold and Finegan Ferreboeuf got an offer most young farmers never see: a 99-year lease on the old Thompson-Finch Farm, arranged with the Columbia Land Conservancy. A lease that long changes how you farm; it's why they've been planting hedgerows and building soil for the long haul instead of scraping by one season at a time.
They grow strawberries and blueberries for U-pick, raspberries in between the two, specialty vegetables for area chefs and home cooks, and pumpkins in fall, all under certified organic practices. It's one of the larger certified-organic U-pick berry operations in the Northeast, though it still feels like a family farm on the ground.
