Storm King Art Center

Storm King gives 500 acres of meadow, woodland, and hillside over entirely to large-scale sculpture: Alexander Calder's towering stabiles, Mark di Suvero's red-orange steel beams stacked against the sky, Maya Lin's Wavefield rippling like water frozen mid-motion, Andy Goldsworthy's fieldstone wall that dips into a pond and climbs back out the other side. The pieces are scaled to the open ground, mountains, and sky behind them, so each one squares off against a specific hillside or line of trees.

Scaling 500 acres

Budget real time. Most visitors need two to four hours to see a fraction on foot. Rent a bike at the entrance to cover more ground, or catch the free tram out to the far sculpture clusters if that much walking isn't in the cards. General admission runs $25 for adults and $15 for students and youth 5 to 17; members and Orange County students under 21 get in free.

The visitor complex that finished in 2025, after a $53 million project, splits ticketing, restrooms, and group check-in into separate pavilions around an open-air lobby, and added the David R. Collens Building where the conservation and fabrication team maintains the collection. The project also reclaimed two old parking lots into new acreage for art and programming.

When storms gather

Storms close the grounds outright with no warning. Once we're out on the open meadow, there's no shelter, so check the forecast before committing to a full loop. Closed Tuesdays; last entry is 5pm even though the grounds stay open until 6.

Go on a weekday morning for meadows close to empty. Weekends, especially in fall when the light through the maples makes everything look staged, draw a real crowd.
