Storm King State Park is for hikers who don't mind using their hands. Storm King Mountain rises on the west bank of the Hudson to about 1,340 feet, with its eastern summit, officially named Butter Hill, standing slightly taller at 1,380 feet. Butter Hill got its English name from Dutch colonists who thought the rounded peak looked like a lump of butter (they called it Boterberg). Together with Breakneck Ridge across the river, Storm King forms the narrows the Dutch called Wey-Gat, or Wind Gate, at the top of the Hudson Highlands.
