Magazzino Italian Art in Cold Spring holds arte povera, postwar Italian art from rags and scrap, plus endangered Sardinian donkeys roaming the grounds.
Magazzino means "warehouse" in Italian, and the converted industrial garage on Route 9 holds a fitting collection: postwar Italian artists of arte povera who built from rags, soil, coal, and other materials most museums wouldn't touch. Founders Nancy Olnick and Giorgio Spanu spent decades hunting these works before opening in 2017, giving the largely overlooked movement its first permanent American home.
The main building, all concrete and glass, holds the arte povera collection. The Robert Olnick Pavilion next door runs rotating exhibitions focused on postwar Italian conceptualists like Piero Manzoni.
