Manitoga in Garrison is Russel Wright's 75-acre woodland design: a house built into the hillside, a reshaped quarry pond, and four miles of trail.
MANITOGA is what's left of Russel Wright's own experiment in living inside a woodland instead of next to one. Wright designed dinnerware and furniture that millions of postwar American households owned; American Modern was, for a time, the best-selling dinnerware pattern in the country. He spent his last decades building a house, studio, and 75 acres of woodland around a former quarry pond in Garrison to prove good design could bend around nature rather than clear it. The name comes from the Algonquin word for "place of great spirit." It's now a National Historic Landmark and a World Monuments Watch site.
