Little Stony Point
Little Stony Point in Cold Spring: a former quarry with a flat loop and man-made cave, with views to Storm King, saved from industrial development.
Little Stony Point used to be an actual island. The Hudson River Stone Company quarried it relentlessly through the early 1900s, filling in the channel between it and the mainland with leftover rock. That's why it reads today as a peninsula rather than the island its name remembers. Quarrying continued until 1944, and you can still walk uphill and duck into "the cave," a man-made tunnel cut about 25 yards into the rock.
