Wonder Lake State Park covers 1,133 acres in Kent, and it stays emptier than the marquee Hudson Valley parks nearby. There's no entrance booth and no gift shop, a couple of unpaved lots off Ludingtonville Road and Mooney Hill Road, and 8.6 miles of trail that started out as bridle paths around a 1920s summer estate before the state took the land over. Those bridle-path roots still show: the yellow, red, blue, and white trails are wide and gently graded compared with the rockier Hudson Highlands trails to the south, making this a good pick when you want distance without a scramble.
The turquoise-blazed Highlands Trail runs through the park too, part of a planned corridor that will eventually connect New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut.
