Brotherhood Winery
America's oldest continuously operating winery has been on this Washingtonville spot since 1839, making sacramental wine through Prohibition.
This winery traces back to 1816, with commercial production starting in 1839, making it the oldest in continuous operation in the country. During Prohibition, when most American wineries shut down, Brotherhood stayed open by producing altar wine for the Catholic Church, a loophole that kept the cellars full for thirteen years.
The cellar tour is the main draw. We descend into chambers hand-dug in the late 1800s, walking past more than two hundred oak barrels, including a vaulted section holding some of the oldest vintages made in America.
