Equilibrium Brewery
Two MIT engineers who built water filters for Haiti and Bangladesh now run Equilibrium in Middletown with twin smokers and a 200-person beer garden.
Ricardo Petroni and Pete Oates met as environmental engineers at MIT, working on water-filtration projects for communities in Haiti and Bangladesh before they turned that same problem-solving instinct toward beer. Their first test batches came out of Oates's house on ordinary homebrewing equipment; it took years of tinkering with hop, malt, and yeast combinations before they had beers worth putting their name on. The taproom now occupies an antique building in downtown Middletown, a real city block rather than a converted barn, with a bar seating around 100 people inside.
