Esopus Meadows Preserve in Ulster Park offers a shoreline loop past the 1871 Esopus Meadows Lighthouse, perfect for a quick walk or quiet afternoon.
The name is a small joke on history: the "meadows" at Esopus Meadows Preserve were underwater tidal flats until 19th-century farmers diked them and brought cattle out to graze on the exposed grasses. Scenic Hudson has since let the site drift back toward its wild state, creating 96 acres of shoreline and forest on the Hudson's western bank that draws a steady mix of walkers, birders, and people looking for a bench with a view.
