Joppenbergh Mountain is a nearly 500-foot limestone hill in the heart of Rosendale, named for Jacob Rutsen, the town's 17th-century founder, and managed today by the Wallkill Valley Land Trust. The 1.5-mile loop trail starts behind Rosendale's Main Street and climbs steadily through mixed forest to the summit, where a clear viewpoint overlooks the 940-foot Rosendale Trestle, an 1870s railroad bridge now used as a pedestrian walkway, the Rondout Creek Valley below, and the Shawangunk Ridge in the distance. The descent is steep but manageable, with well-marked switchbacks and a few benches along the way.
