Shaupeneak Ridge Cooperative Recreation Area is a 936-acre park straddling the line between Esopus and New Paltz, covering the ridge and slopes of Shaupeneak Mountain, an 892-foot summit in the Marlboro Mountains. The "cooperative" in the name is literal: Scenic Hudson bought the first 500-plus acres here in 1995 together with the state DEC and the West Esopus Landowners Association, and all three still manage the land jointly. Later purchases have nearly doubled the park's original footprint.
