James Baird donated 590 acres of former farmland in Pleasant Valley to the state in 1939, on the condition that the park carry his name. He was a contractor and engineer whose firm built the Lincoln Memorial. The land's flat, open character that made it good for farming turned out to be equally good for golf. Robert Trent Jones laid out the 18-hole course here in 1948, and it's still the park's centerpiece, with a driving range, pro shop, and a par-5 13th hole that gives better golfers something to think about.
