The Neuberger Museum of Art at Purchase College, SUNY, holds nearly 7,000 works of modern, contemporary, African, and ancient Mediterranean art, all traceable back to Roy R. Neuberger's founding gift of 300 pieces in 1969. Neuberger was an unusual collector; he bought work within a month or a year of an artist making it, betting on living American painters and sculptors rather than waiting for reputations to settle. The permanent collection reads like a snapshot of mid-century American art as it happened.
