Stissing Mountain rises from the middle of Thompson Pond Preserve, 530 acres the Nature Conservancy has protected since 1958. The mountain's Precambrian bedrock is old and strange, geologically isolated from the rest of the region's rock in a way that still puzzles geologists. The stone is distinctive enough for its own exhibit at the American Museum of Natural History.
The fire tower on top is a 79-foot, six-inch International Derrick steel tower, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1933.
