Ashokan Rail Trail
Ashokan Rail Trail in West Hurley: an 11.5-mile crushed-stone trail along the reservoir's north shore with Catskill views and wetland boardwalk.
The Ashokan Rail Trail opened in fall 2019 after years of development by Ulster County in partnership with the NYC Department of Environmental Protection. It follows the old Ulster & Delaware Railroad right-of-way (the line stopped running in 1978) and gives the public its first legal access to this shoreline since the reservoir itself was built, between 1907 and 1915. That project flooded eleven hamlets (Ashton, Boiceville, Brodhead's Bridge, Brown's Station, Glenford, Olive, Olive Bridge, Olive City, Shokan, West Hurley, and West Shokan) and moved more than 2,600 graves to make room for a reservoir that still supplies a large share of New York City's drinking water.
