Hervey White built Maverick Concert Hall by hand in 1916 with no architect: a barn-shaped structure with a gambrel roof, heavy timber framing, and wide plank walls nailed straight to the frame. It wasn't engineered for acoustics, but wood behaves like wood, and the room turns out to be one of the best places in the county to hear a string quartet. The sound is warm and close even from the back rows, and on a still evening you can hear crickets under the music through the open sides.
