The Colony in Woodstock occupies a 1929 hotel ballroom with a 100-seat room and a stage barely off the floor. Blues, comedy, and theater play here.
Woodstock hotelier Morris Newgold built the Colony after his previous venture, the Overlook Mountain House, burned down. Construction started in 1927, and the hotel opened to guests in the summer of 1929, right as travelers heading up Rock City Road to Overlook Mountain needed somewhere to stop first. Through the 1930s, the ballroom filled with big bands and summering New Yorkers. Newgold died in 1940; his son Gabriel ran the place until 1960, when it became the Colony Arts Center, hosting antiques fairs and art shows.
