Levon Helm built the Barn himself in 1975: hemlock, pine, and bluestone on 18 acres outside the village, engineered by ear rather than blueprint. The space sounds unlike any other room in the Valley, with high vaulted ceilings and warm wood surfaces that remind people of a church more than a concert hall.
The Midnight Ramble started in 2004 as something closer to a rent party than a concert series. Helm was recovering from throat cancer and buried in medical debt, so he and his daughter Amy began inviting people to the Barn on Saturday nights, pay-what-you-could, patterned loosely on the traveling medicine shows Helm had watched growing up in Arkansas.
