Fahnestock State Park's Canopus Lake in Carmel offers a sandy beach and calm water, the easiest lake swim in Putnam County, plus trails linking the AT.
Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park covers more than 14,000 acres straddling Putnam and Dutchess Counties. Most visitors head straight for Canopus Lake, the sandy-beach centerpiece near the main entrance on Route 301. The water stays calm enough for casual swimming and easy kayaking, and the park rents boats right at the beach if you didn't bring your own.
Entry runs $10 per vehicle on weekends and holidays from late May through mid-June, then daily until Labor Day.
