Emelin Theatre in Mamaroneck has been Westchester's longest-running performing-arts venue since 1972 with 264 seats. No seat is far from the stage.
The Emelin opened in 1972 with a $360,000 gift from pharmacist Arthur Emelin, routed through the Mamaroneck Free Library. Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates designed it as a flexible space: originally equipped with 180 fixed seats plus 200 movable ones that could reconfigure into a thrust stage or arena setup. The theater became a nonprofit in 1991 and has since settled into its current form: 264 fixed seats, with a little over 200 on the orchestra level and 45 in a mezzanine, 14 of them wheelchair accessible.
A 2021 renovation finished in time for the theater's 50th anniversary the following year, updating the sound and lighting rigs, replacing the seating with more accessible options, redoing the HVAC, and refreshing the dressing rooms and lobby.
