What's now called America's greatest forgotten garden began when Samuel Untermyer, a Wall Street lawyer who made his fortune on corporate mergers before turning around to fight monopolies, subway fare hikes, and antisemitism, bought this estate in 1899. Over the next four decades, he brought in Beaux-Arts architect William Welles Bosworth, the same architect behind MIT's original campus buildings, to lay out roughly 150 acres in six sections: the Walled Garden, the Vista, the Color Gardens, the Rose Garden, the vegetable gardens, and the Temple of Love.
