Kykuit (Dutch for "lookout") has been the Rockefeller family's home on this hilltop above the Hudson since John D. Rockefeller Sr. built it in 1913 in the four-story Beaux-Arts style architect William Welles Bosworth designed for it; four generations of Rockefellers lived here after him. The 87-acre grounds mix formal Italianate gardens with the wide river view the name promises, and the house's 40 rooms hold furniture and art collected across a century of the family.
