Kykuit, the Rockefeller Estate
Nelson Rockefeller carved underground galleries into Kykuit in Pocantico Hills for Picasso tapestries, Calders, and Warhols overlooking the Hudson River.
Kykuit (Dutch for "lookout") has been the Rockefeller family's home on this hilltop above the Hudson since John D. Rockefeller Sr. built it in 1913 in the four-story Beaux-Arts style architect William Welles Bosworth designed for it; four generations of Rockefellers lived here after him. The 87-acre grounds mix formal Italianate gardens with the wide river view the name promises, and the house's 40 rooms hold furniture and art collected across a century of the family.
