Silver Lake has been a Croton institution since the early 1900s, when the village bought the property with help from Miss Mayo and the Harmon Realty Company to keep a lake beach in local hands. For decades the fee was a dollar a family for the whole season; it costs more now, but the arrangement hasn't changed: this is a resident beach, not a public one.
The lake itself is small and calm, the kind of water where you can watch your kids without much effort. Lifeguards staff a roped-off swimming area, and the sand beach faces a wooded shoreline that keeps the place feeling more like a farm pond than a public pool.
