Croton Point Park in Croton-on-Hudson sprawls across 508 acres where a capped landfill has become one of New York's most important eagle wintering sites.
Croton Point Park sits on a peninsula jutting into the Hudson from the east shore. Its most interesting feature is a former landfill: the town dump closed and was capped in 1986, and that reclaimed mound is now one of New York's most important bald eagle wintering sites. Audubon estimates it can host close to a tenth of the state's wintering eagle population in a good year, along with red-tailed hawks and other raptors. We've watched hawks hunting the capped landfill in broad daylight while eagles work the river below.
