Geoff Thompson has pressed cider from heirloom apples since 1975 at Thompson's Cider Mill in Croton-on-Hudson, using trees from the 1870s Rickert orchard.
Geoff Thompson, a newspaper reporter, started pressing cider in a Teatown Lake barn on fall weekends in 1975, using apples he collected himself. In 1980 he moved the operation to Blinn Road, onto ground from the old Rickert Fruit Farm orchard dating to the 1870s. He spent years planting heirloom varieties alongside surviving Baldwin trees until the orchard grew to more than 500 trees across four acres. A 1992 fire destroyed the house and mill barn, but neighbors responded by mailing checks and notes that Geoff never cashed, keeping them as reminders of who showed up when it mattered.
