Black Cow Coffee Company in Croton-on-Hudson roasts beans daily since 1995, serving chai regulars order first in vintage armchairs.
Since 1995, Black Cow has been downtown Croton's center, much like a good diner in a small town. Regulars flow in before the 5:30 a.m. open on their way to the train, and by mid-morning the mismatched vintage chairs are full of people settling in with their coffee.
Michael and Peggy Grant opened it in December 1995; after 25 years pulling shots, they retired to Vermont and handed the shop to Cole, the shop's longtime roaster, and his wife Faith, who met here in 2011 and took over in 2023. The beans are roasted on-site, the chai is what regulars order for out-of-towners, and the bagel and sandwich menu covers gluten-free and vegan without making a production of it.
