Mianus River Gorge Preserve protects roughly 700 acres of old-growth hemlock forest in northern Westchester, one of the last stands in the Northeast that was never logged. That's why the trees along the gorge rim tower so much higher and darker than anything in the surrounding suburbs. The Nature Conservancy and a group of local scientists set the land aside in 1953 specifically to study what an untouched Eastern forest looked like, and it has stayed a working research site since, alongside its public trails.
