Buttermilk Falls drops 36 feet down a mossy cliff face in Peekamoose Valley, then slides over a smaller four-foot ledge into a shallow pool. It's one of several cascades along CR-42, a road that follows Rondout Creek through some of the prettiest glacial terrain in the Catskills.
The walk in spans only a few hundred feet from the pullout over mossy, uneven ground, so decent shoes matter more than stamina here. Spring brings the heaviest flow right after snowmelt; by August the falls can thin to a trickle, so plan around the season if a full cascade is what you're after.
