Casa Susanna sits inside the restored Camptown Hotel in Leeds, just off Route 9W, taking its name from real history. The original Casa Susanna was a mid-century Catskills retreat where transgender women and cross-dressing men could gather and be themselves at a time when doing so in public could get them arrested. Chef Efrén Hernández built the restaurant as his own homage to that legacy and to the Jalisco cooking of his parents, who immigrated from Mexico to Los Angeles, where he grew up. The room honors that history quietly.
