Springwood, the Hyde Park estate FDR's father James bought in 1867, was Franklin Roosevelt's home base through his childhood, his bout with polio, and four terms as president. The original Italianate farmhouse was expanded and remodeled in 1917 into the fieldstone-and-stucco mansion that stands today, reflecting old-money Hudson Valley taste more than presidential grandeur.
