Rhinebeck Mercantile in this 1946 department store passed to two sisters in 2023. They kept the tradition of treating a clothing sale like a conversation.
The store sits at the corner of Routes 9 and 308, Rhinebeck's only stoplight, in a brick building that dates to 1870 and housed a department store starting in 1946. When the Schreibers retired after running it for 31 years, sisters Kenna Hawco and Lorrie Kruger took over in January 2023 and renamed it Rhinebeck Mercantile. They already owned Winter Sun & Summer Moon, the jewelry and clothing shop directly across the street, so the transition kept the corner in the same family of local shopkeepers.
The merchandise leans toward brands that hold up: Pendleton, Levi's, Habitat, Dakota Grizzly, April Cornell, Tribal.
