Oblong Books in Rhinebeck is the Hudson Valley's largest independent bookstore, run by father and daughter since 1975. Monthly author nights draw writers.
Oblong opened in Millerton in 1975 as Dick Hermans and Holly Nelson's shop and relocated to Rhinebeck in 2001 when Holly retired. Dick and his daughter Suzanna have kept it growing on Montgomery Street since, building it into the Hudson Valley's largest independent bookstore. With roughly 30,000 titles spanning two locations, you'll find fiction, cookbooks, kids' books, and a CD section that has outlasted most record stores.
Half the fun of browsing is discovering staff-written recommendation cards tucked into the shelves.
