Cinnamon Indian in Rhinebeck serves South Indian and Sri Lankan dishes, with crisp dosas made to order and a spice-driven cocktail room upstairs.
Chaminda and Shiwanti Widyarathna opened Cinnamon in June 2011, first a short distance south of the village, before settling into the current East Market Street storefront in the center of Rhinebeck. Chaminda grew up in South India, Shiwanti in Sri Lanka, and the menu draws from both places rather than sticking to the North Indian dishes most Hudson Valley Indian restaurants default to.
Start with the dosas: crisp, fermented rice-and-lentil crepes served with coconut chutney, made to order rather than pre-made and reheated. Sri Lankan short eats sit alongside South Indian curries and tandoori standards, and the kitchen leans on local, organic ingredients where it can instead of running everything through one spice blend.
