Ecuadorian and Alabama influences merge at Lil' Deb's Oasis in Hudson: fried fish, plantain dishes, and housemade empanadas.
Lil' Deb's Oasis opened in 2015 when painters-turned-cooks Hannah Black and Carla Perez-Gallardo started doing family-style dinners in what had been Debbie Fiero's diner. Fiero retired and handed them the lease; the name honors her. Perez-Gallardo grew up around a busy Ecuadorian kitchen in Queens, and Black came up cooking at Mission Chinese and Hartwood in Tulum before they built a menu they call tropical comfort food: fried fish, a few plantain preparations, housemade empanadas, dosa, octopus, ceviche, tamales.
Black stepped back from day-to-day cooking in 2021, but Perez-Gallardo keeps both of their fingerprints in every dish.
