Woodland Valley Campground is the trailhead most hikers use for the Wittenberg-Cornell-Slide Trail, also called the Burroughs Range Trail: a 9.75-mile loop with 3,620 feet of climbing that strings together three of the biggest peaks in the Catskills. Slide Mountain, the last of the three, tops out at 4,180 feet, the highest point in the range. Wittenberg comes first and has the payoff most people remember, a rock ledge that opens onto the Ashokan Reservoir and the Hudson Valley beyond it. Cornell is shorter but steeper, with slab climbing that catches people off guard right after Wittenberg's grind.
