Minnewaska State Park Preserve

The Kerhonkson entrance off Route 44-55 opens onto nearly 24,000 acres of Shawangunk Ridge holding two of the world's five sky lakes, glacial pools so clear over white quartz conglomerate that they read turquoise at midday. The carriage road loop around Lake Minnewaska is under two miles, flat and wide, an easy walk even for a family without serious hiking ambitions. Beyond that, fifty-plus miles of trail thread hemlock forest and run along cliff edges above the Rondout Valley, so there's real depth to explore.

Lake Awosting and the ridge loops

Lake Awosting has its own swimming beach open June 19 through September 7; the rest of the year the shoreline is for walking, not wading. Awosting Falls drops in stages a short walk from the main lot, an easy add-on if you came mainly for the lake. For real distance and views, the Gertrude's Nose loop runs the carriage roads out along the cliff edge for six to seven miles round trip (longer if you add Millbrook Mountain), with the Shawangunk Ridge falling away on one side the whole way.

Planning your day on the ridge

Weekends and holidays from April 18 through November 15, you need a parking reservation: book a morning session (9am to 2pm, arrive between 9 and 11) or an afternoon one (2pm to close) through ReserveAmerica up to two weeks out, and go early anyway because sessions sell out. Wear boots with real tread and bring more water than you think you need, since most of the ridge is open rock with no shade. The ice caves and Sam's Point Overlook are part of the preserve too, but they're a twenty-minute drive away through the separate Cragsmoor entrance, not this one.
