Cedar Grove, Thomas Cole's home from 1836 until his death in 1848, is where the Hudson River School, the first homegrown American art movement, effectively began. Cole worked in the studio here, and the porch of the Federal-style main house still frames the exact Catskill ridgeline he painted again and again in the 1830s. Standing there, you can match what's in front of you to the paintings.
The 110 acres of grounds are free and open daily from dawn to dusk, so you can visit just for the view and a walk.
