Drowned Lands Brewery
Drowned Lands Brewery in Warwick is a 1914 reform school now growing hops on black dirt farmland hand-dug in 1835, still used for the beer.
Mike Kraai wanted to build a destination brewery like the ones he'd seen in Maine and Vermont. He found the building almost by accident, driving past an old institutional complex on his way to look at a different lot in Warwick. It went up in 1914 as the Warwick State Training School for Boys, cycled through names and missions over the decades, and ended as the Mid-Orange Regional Correctional Facility, which closed in 2011. He put down his first payment in January 2018, spent two years gutting and rebuilding, and opened in fall 2020.
