Long Dock Park
Long Dock in Beacon: a 19-acre park on a former ferry terminal with a George Trakas sculpture and kayak rentals off the cove for exploring the Hudson.
Long Dock used to be a car-ferry terminal, where barges hauled entire train cars across the river in the 1800s, and after that it spent time as an oil depot and then a junkyard before Scenic Hudson took over the 19-acre peninsula and rebuilt it as a park. The wetlands and meadows you walk through now are reconstructed, and it shows in the best way: the paths are flat, well-marked gravel and pavement, and you're never more than a few minutes from a river view. Parking is free but fills on nice weekends; the Metro-North station lot next door is open to park visitors on weekends too.
The George Trakas sculpture, Beacon Point, sits at the tip of the peninsula, part angling deck, part boardwalk, part rebuilt bulkhead, built in 2007.
