Mount Gulian preserves the legacy of an 18th-century Dutch merchant house built between 1730 and 1740 by Gulian Verplanck, later destroyed by fire in 1931 and reconstructed, reopening to the public in 1975. The site's most famous moment came in 1782-83, when Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben headquartered here and, with fellow officers, founded the Society of the Cincinnati, America's oldest veterans' fraternal organization.
