Linda Mussmann founded TSL in New York City in 1973 with co-director Claudia Bruce. When the National Endowment for the Arts began requiring an anti-obscenity pledge from grantees in 1991, they turned down a $10,000 grant and moved the whole operation to a Columbia Street storefront in Hudson. That refusal still shapes what gets programmed here: work too strange, too political, or too small an audience for a commercial multiplex.
The main screening room seats around sixty people in mismatched, comfortable chairs, closer to someone's living room than a cinema.
