Sunnyside in Tarrytown was Irving's home: a 1650s farmhouse he transformed into an ivy-covered cottage with an 1847 Spanish tower and pond.
In June 1835, Washington Irving bought Wolfert's Roost, a modest 1650s Dutch farmhouse, for $1,800. Over the next decade and a half, he transformed it into the cottage standing today. Working with his friend, painter George Harvey, Irving added crenellated gables, weathervanes, and vines. He created a pond out front, naming it "the Little Mediterranean." After serving as U.S. minister in Spain, he built the "Spanish Tower" in 1847, its stepped roofline borrowed from the Alhambra.
