Senate House State Historic Site
New York's first Senate met in this 1676 Kingston Dutch stone house, the only building to survive when the British burned the town in 1777.
New York's first State Senate convened in September 1777 in merchant Abraham Van Gaasbeek's 1676 Dutch stone house. When British troops burned Kingston to the ground weeks later as retaliation for the town's role in hosting the new government, the house alone survived. Today, stepping through its low doorway brings you into rooms that preserve 18th-century Dutch Colonial life: low ceilings, wide-plank floors, deep fireplaces, original furnishings, and a recreated period kitchen.
