The Stockade District, also called Uptown Kingston, is the oldest surviving Dutch settlement in New York State. Governor Stuyvesant ordered it fortified in 1658 to protect early settlers. Walk these blocks and you're surrounded by Federal, Georgian, Greek Revival, Victorian, and contemporary architecture, often on the same block. The district holds 21 pre-Revolutionary houses, with the 1777 Senate House marking where New York's first capital was established.
