Wilderstein sprawls across 40 acres of river bluff in Rhinebeck, a Queen Anne mansion with a five-story circular tower, wraparound porte cochere and verandah, and rooms filled with stained glass and carved woodwork. It began in 1852 as something more modest: an Italianate villa designed by architect John Warren Ritch for Thomas Suckley and his wife Catherine Bowne. Their son Robert Bowne Suckley and his wife Elizabeth Montgomery wanted something grander, and in 1888, Poughkeepsie architect Arnout Cannon delivered it: a third floor, a multi-gabled attic, and the five-story circular tower with wraparound porte cochere and verandah. New York decorator Joseph Burr Tiffany filled the rooms with aesthetic-movement furnishings that turned the interior into a gallery of Gilded Age taste.
