Bardavon 1869 Opera House in Poughkeepsie is New York's oldest theater, with a 1928 Wurlitzer organ that still plays and sounds right.
The Bardavon, opened in 1869, is the oldest continuously operating theater in New York State. Its 944-seat main house wears Victorian bones: ornate balconies, gilded trim, and brass fixtures restored with modern sound and lighting. The 1928 Wurlitzer pipe organ remains one of the last still installed in its original New York theater and gets a full workout at silent film nights and special concerts.
That organ has traveled further than most instruments ever will.
