The oldest continuously operating theater in New York State, opened in 1869, still runs its 1928 Wurlitzer organ, the same pipe organ that got shipped to a private home in Scarsdale in the 1960s before the New York Theatre Organ Society hauled it back and rebuilt it. The Bardavon, opened in 1869, is the oldest continuously operating theater in New York State. Its 944-seat main house wears Victorian bones: ornate balconies, gilded trim, and brass fixtures restored with modern sound and lighting. The 1928 Wurlitzer pipe organ remains one of the last still installed in its original New York theater and gets a full workout at silent film nights and special concerts.
That organ has traveled further than most instruments ever will. In the 1960s it was pulled from the stage and shipped to a private home in Scarsdale, then trucked back to Poughkeepsie and left in storage for years with no plan to bring it back. The New York Theatre Organ Society found it in 1983, negotiated its restoration and reinstallation, and brought it home in 1990. Since then NYTOS has maintained it meticulously, gradually expanding its voice with a clarinet, an orchestral oboe, and an English post horn.
Programming spans classical orchestra and opera, including Metropolitan Opera HD simulcasts, alongside folk, rock, comedy, dance, and theater. The Hudson Valley Philharmonic is based here.
