Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center at Vassar in Poughkeepsie holds Hudson River School painters, Picasso, and Matisse. Admission has been free since 1993.
The Loeb's collection traces back to the college's founding gift in 1864 from Matthew Vassar, making it one of the first art museums conceived as part of a college's original vision rather than added on later. The building itself was designed by Cesar Pelli and opened in November 1993: low brick galleries connected to the collegiate-Gothic Taylor-Van Ingen Hall next door, which still houses the art department and library. Pelli made sure most of the rooms have skylights, so the same painting reads completely differently depending on the hour and season you visit.
The collection has grown to more than 22,000 works spanning six millennia: antiquities, European Old Masters, a strong representation of Hudson River School landscapes, photography, and an active contemporary program.
